this is my first blog ! I will assume that the reader has absolutely no prior knowledge of modern jewelry techniques- this way we are all on the same page.
People have had an interest and made items for thousands of years. Basic natural laws of temperature and metallurgy may prove perhaps there are in fact very few modern jewelry techniques.
Before we go on, I have noticed a subject which is continually downplayed, rarely publicized and cant be over dramatized is safety issues. There are many safety issues that need to be considered as being more important than they are currently taught. Think!
My personal opinion in regard to designs is: jewelry is split into 2 camps- one is highly geometric in nature, using basic circle, triangle, square, and diamond shapes. the second design type is natural shapes and is more organic or asymmetrical. The two different styles do not mix very well. So, in considering your design, you need to pick one.
If you use the 'former'- square, circle, triangle; you may feel it necessary to be very exacting, much like a technical engineer, where millimeters or smaller are used. It is useful to have some drafting or technical drawing background experience for this type of work. Many people find this exacting nature stifling and difficult on their patience.
If you go with organic shapes you have more freedom and artistic license-though, for new students , it may be 'too much freedom' which can be ,well , too much. So I guess they each have their place.
Actually, jewelry making is fairly simple if one follows the basic rules closely. The easiest way to explain it - it is like baking a cake- you follow a simple recipe & try to be exacting. There are many simple basics truths / laws that you will be required to follow in order to be successful.
After you have mastered a few techniques, you may be tempted to possibly start to stray from your 'recipe'- but you cant go too far. For example -1. all attempts require a clean surface for any welding or soldering process. -can you solder without a clean surface? sure- i have seen it done, but it is evident to a knowledgeable person and is usually a mess at best. Step skipping is not advised.
If you are getting classroom instruction, be sure to listen to the process instructions as they are there for your safety as well as to insure your quickest success. ( to be continued )
